STELLA UPPAL SUBBIAH

For over a decade Subbiah has perfected her art as one of the UK’s premier performers and choreographers of Bharatanatyam – a popular South Indian dance form which is a 20th century reconstruction of Cathir, the art of temple dancers. Born and raised for her early years in Bihar, North-eastern India, she is the daughter of renowned Kathakali dancer Hari Uppal; unsurprisingly she very quickly found a passion in dancing. She obtained an astounding government of India scholarship to the prestigious Kalakshetra School of Dance in Chennai, under the watchful tutelage of the illustrious Rukmini Devi, a colossus in the world of Indian dance.

Subbiah joined the faculty of London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS), one of Europe’s leading contemporary dance conservatoires, in 2004. Here she has designed and delivered a unique Bharatanatyam curriculum - enabling students to develop their classical skills alongside an in depth contemporary dance training. In this way, she has brought a rare, ancient dance form to eager youths here in the UK.
