KAJOL'S HEART IS SET ON MALAYALAM 'HEARTBEATS'

Bollywood actress Kajol is all set to play a lead role in a Malayalam film tentatively titled "Heartbeats". In 1996, she hit it off with the Tamil audiences with her first south Indian love story "Minsarakanavu". The film, was noted for Kajol's sprightly performance as well as its song sequences.

As Bollywood's love affair with London continues with films being shot at various locations here, British film authorities have now unveiled a new map that lists venues where recent blockbusters were shot. The new movie map is eighth in a series of maps. More than 40 Hindi films were shot in London last year.

I PAY MORE TAXES THAN HRITHIK: AMITABH

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan claims he is the "top" tax payer in the country with Rs.15.59 crore (Rs.155.9 million), and with Aishwarya Rai joining the family, the Bachchan family's total tax would be around Rs.25.3 crore (Rs.253 million). He was reacting to a reports about Hrithik Roshan's taxes.

AFTER BACHCHANS, DEOLS PLAN TO TAP COLLECTIVE EQUITY

Inspired by brand name Bachchan, the Deols are planning their own collective strategy. If Anil Sharma's "Apne", which features Dharmendra and his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, is a success the family intends to come together in other films as well. "It all depends on how 'Apne' does," says Bobby.

CANNES: WAKE UP CALL FOR INDIA

India, one of the largest filmmaking countries in the world, has again failed to mark its presence at the Cannes Film Festival. While the 60th Cannes Film Festival beginning May 16 is dominated by a European line-up, some impressive Asian works too have managed to enter the competition section. But there are none from India.

HINDU RADICALS ON RAMPAGE: TARGET STAR, SHILPA

GERE-SHILPA ON-STAGE KISSING EVOKES PROTESTS

New Delhi, India: Richard Gere's on-stage kissing and hugging of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty during an AIDS awareness function here triggered a plethora of protests in several towns Monday against the "obscene" act, with some people even burning effigies of the Hollywood star. An embarrassed Shilpa said: "This was a little too much."

LAKHIA FACES NO AWKWARDNESS IN DIRECTING DIA

Apoorva Lakhia, who has cast his former pal Dia Mirza in "Shootout At Lonkhandwala", says he doesn't feel uncomfortable directing her despite personal relations having gone sour. NOT WITHOUT EKTA KAPOOR, SAYS SAMEER NAIR

Sameer Nair, the head of NDTV's entertainment division, NDTV Imagine, is all set to reap the benefits of the TV industry boom but not without his favourite producer Ekta Kapoor. "Ekta has been my favourite producer and I hope to continue with her. We are in talks with her as well as other major producers like Hatsoff, Endemol, Synergy," said Nair.

Her portrayal of a British Asian girl in "Namastey London" may have earned her rave reviews, but Katrina Kaif is fed up of waiting for a big hit. "I'm tired of waiting for my films to work. The just released "Shakalaka Boom Boom" hasn't been a very happy experience either for its director Suneel Darshan or his leading lady Kangana Ranaut. 'LAJJO' A DOUBLE BONANZA FOR KAREENA KAPOOR

Kareena Kapoor is excited about the "double bonanza" of working in Mani Ratnam's new film "Lajjo" with Aamir Khan for a co-star. "I feel I'm in seventh heaven. First the amazing response to 'Omkara' and now I've signed a formal contract for Mani Ratnam's film. He wants me to prepare for the role until next winter," she said.

Urmila Matondkar has done her first children's film called "Fun On The Run". She complains that programmes for children are few and far between. She told IANS. "I've just two scenes. But what a pleasure it was to work with these two child actors. I always want to connect with kids. Not much is done for them in the way of education and entertainment.

MAHIMA CHAUDHARY IN THE FAMILY WAY?

A visibly embarrassed Mahima Chaudhary, who was inaugurating a jewellery exhibition, neither refuted nor confirmed rumours of her secret marriage and pregnancy. Veteran theatre personality Barry John has uprooted himself and his school from Delhi and moved to Mumbai, the heart of the Hindi film industry, because the capital doesn't offer enough opportunities to do well. CRITICISM OF MUMBAI HURTS JAVED AKHTAR

Bollywood's well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar is in a nostalgic mood about the city that nurtured his dreams - and he calls it a no-nonsense city. "I came to Mumbai on Oct 4, 1954. Since then this city has given me everything - from food to fame. I was taken aback when Reader's Digest called it a rude city. Mumbai isn't a rude city. It's a no-nonsense city."

FLOW OF EMOTIONS DRAWS CROWD TO 'THE NAMESAKE'

The flow of emotions in Mira Nair's "The Namesake", which has Tabu and Irrfan Khan in pivotal roles, seems to have struck the right chord with the audience as they continue to flock theatres to catch the film even a month after its release. The film's performance in India continues to be strong with first week net box office collections estimated at Rs.12.6 million.
