Harman
announces taskforce to increase asian women councillors
Harriet
Harman, Minister for Women and Equality, today launched
a new taskforce to help more black, Asian and minority
ethnic women to become councillors. Only around 168 out
of 20,000 councillors are black, Asian or minority ethnic
women. This is less than one per cent, despite the fact
they make up more than 5% of the population.

charity AFP shares in Government funding boost
The Asian Foundation for Philanthropy (AFP), a
charity that helps the British Asian Community contribute
to social change in India is among the new projects sharing
a £5.5m Government funding boost. The Asian Foundation
for Philanthropy (AFP) has a long history of delivering
a positive impact through their volunteering scheme and
has received £149,416 over three years from the
DFID.

Christies
London is to host a celebration of South Asian
Modern & Contemporary Art from 7 -11 June
2008 with an exhibition of works from the private
art collection of Indian industrialist Anil Ambani
and his wife Tina Ambani. From 7 June to 10 June,
this collection of 32 works showcases artists
such as Maqbool Fida Husain, Tyeb Mehta and Syed
Haider Raza and Atul Dodiya among others.

Library's lavishly illustrated 17th century manuscripts
of the Ramayana story from the volumes of Rana Jagat

'Noor' (meaning 'Light' in Urdu) is a spectacular
dance and music piece fusing acrobatic martial arts
with contemporary dance and North Indian classical
Kathak dance. The production questions the nature
of 'enlightenment', exploring our notion of light
from a scientific, religious and mystical point

on Sunday 3rd August featuring Nitin Sawhney (DJ

rapper UK Apache and The Kalyan feat. Gubsy (on
Dhol and electric Tabla) and Steve (Guitar) and
Anila (Samplers & Mix) live. Theyll be
also joined by Shaantis front man Manga and
resident DJ MSC.

of London Festival 2008 celebrates India, 20 June
- 10 July 2008
This year's City of London Festival will take place
from 20 June to 10 July 2008 and welcomes five Indian
classical master artists. Sarod player Amjad Ali
Khan, soprano Patricia Rozario, vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty,
flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and tabla player
Zakir Hussain will all perform.
